Phonics

St Gregory’s Phonics Rationale

Early Reading

To supplement our teaching of Early reading, we use the DfE approved scheme ‘RWInc’.

This is used from EYFS through to KS1. Children who are still in need of Phonics teaching in KS2 are taught using the ‘Catch Up’ element of the scheme.

How you can help at home

Encourage your child to read their Read Write Inc. Storybook aloud more than once – this builds fluency and expression.

Practise the sounds, story words, red words and speedy words (at the back of the book)

Praise their efforts and celebrate even the smallest steps of progress.

Ask simple questions about the story to check their understanding and encourage discussion.

Enjoy sharing the library book together by reading it aloud and talking about the story.
