Writing

St Gregory’s Writing Rationale

Our writing units follow the Romero Reading Through to Writing pathway, ensuring consistent, engaging English teaching:

  • Hook & Immersion – Capture interest and immerse students in the topic or genre.
  • Reading – Shared reading, text analysis, and vocabulary development.
  • Features – Identify and discuss key features of the writing outcome.
  • Skills Focus – Targeted grammar and punctuation practice.
  • Model Text – Study a WAGOLL and practise techniques through guided writing.
  • Planning – Organise ideas and structure before drafting.
  • Independent Draft – Write independently, applying learned skills.
  • Edit & Publish – Revise, improve, and celebrate final pieces.

We embed Voice 21 oracy methodology throughout units, encouraging discussion, debate, presentations, and exploratory talk.

Adaptation & Scaffolding

  • Lessons are adapted to meet diverse needs using strategies like Widgit symbols, visual prompts, sentence starters, and guided group work.
  • Scaffolded tasks gradually release responsibility, supporting all learners to achieve independence.
  • Teachers differentiate planning to ensure every student can access, engage with, and excel in each unit.
